When I was little, I was always fascinated by animals. I remember the time in 3rd grade when I made (and I still have), a book I called "The Book of Animals." I remember how proud I was to document and illustrate all of the animals on this Earth (which consisted of no more than 50 species according to 3rd grade self). My fascination stemmed from the idea that I thought being an animal would be so much cooler than being human (I still do, in some cases). Have you ever imagined yourself as a penguin OR sloth, maybe?
Funny thing is, I only recall going to the zoo a handful of times as a child. Besides the one field trip in elementary and the second one in middle school, there weren't many chances to appreciate their seemingly untamed beauty. When Joyce asked me if I wanted to go to the zoo, expecting a mediocre, "do we have to?" response, she was quite taken by my animal-like eagerness (analogous to UP's "yap yap yap yap yap SQUIRREL!" response). Needless to say, I'm still blown away by their beauty and I too sometimes wish I could be an animal in my "Book of ANIMALS!"
