What is it?
Here's the thing. I've known couples who have been together for 3, 5 or even 13 years when they got engaged and I totally see "it" - the reasons why they work, the reasons why they're together, the reasons how they've been together for such a long time and it never ceases to amaze me.
So whenever I meet a couple for the first time, I try to find "it," what is it about them that led to them this very moment where he drops down on one knee and she says yes, "I'm crazy enough that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you and only you." If you don't think that's insane, you're probably just as insane. But when you meet Sam and Dan, it's not farfetched and you begin to understand. Like other couples that have decided to walk this path, they really do have "it" and their relationship is a reflection of that. For Sam and Dan, it's because Dan listens.
When Sam and I were discussing potential dates to meet up, I inquired when she and Dan would be free. Sam mentions, "oh don't worry, we can just figure out a date that works and I'll just tell Dan." So much for coordinating! But that's when you know they have something special. There's that trust that whatever Sam thinks is best, Dan will agree. The one exception will probably be direction, in which case, Dan is probably right. You learn that he's the type of person who's going to stand by Sam regardless of whatever obstacles that life throws at them. And that makes them work.
And with Sam, I'm utterly impressed by how she's willing to go out of the way to help out. The day before the engagement shoot, she drove all the way up from Annapolis on a Friday afternoon to pre-scout the park for where we can park and where we can take photos. Who does that??? And the backdrops were absolutely stunning. Never would I have imagined to find fallen logs, draw bridges, train tracks and tunnels nestled in the woods outside of Baltimore (oh yeah, Californian speaking here). Regardless, Patapsco State Park is a treasure and it was an absolute joy to stroll around the park with them.
Together, Sam and Dan are amazing and absolutely fun to be with and I'm confident that come mid-October, their wedding is going to be a blast.
*Thanks again to Donna, my creative director, for coming along with me on my recent shoots. I'm lucky to have you as my inspiration and cheerleader.
